Mark Houghton
“My approach is simple: protect capital first, then grow it wisely through globally diversified strategies. But just as important is delivering exceptional service—clear communication, tailored advice, and a steadfast commitment to putting clients’ interests above all else.”
As Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Saxe Coburg, Mark leads all investment decisions, focusing on active portfolio management, global fund research, and market analysis. With over 35 years of experience, he is dedicated to delivering outstanding risk-adjusted returns through rigorously allocating capital and transparent client communication, supported by detailed reporting and regular reviews.
Mark began his career as a secondary school Math and Economics teacher before studying Finance at Waikato University. Recognising shortcomings within traditional asset allocation frameworks, he established his own business in 1989. His investment strategy was inspired by the US endowment model, partnering with top-tier fund managers globally to construct diversified portfolios tailored for New Zealand investors. This research-driven methodology reflects Mark’s independent, forward-thinking approach.
Guided by Warren Buffett’s principle— “Rule No. 1: Never lose money. Rule No. 2: Never forget Rule No. 1.”—Mark prioritises long-term capital growth through disciplined risk management, selective global opportunities, and conflict-free solutions aligned with clients’ financial objectives.
Outside of work Mark is Chairman of the Hōhepa Foundation and enjoys time with his family (especially his young grandchildren), surfing, paddle boarding, and traveling.
